Stem Cell Ruling Leaves Some Disability Research In Limbo

A court action earlier this week halting federal funding for research involving human embryonic stem cells is leaving some research into developmental disabilities up in the air. On Monday,...

Churches Use Creativity To Reach Those With Disabilities PDF Print E-mail

A shorter, more interactive service is allowing some people with developmental disabilities the opportunity to engage in religion while being themselves.

The services offered at a handful of Wisconsin churches are simpler and less structured than traditional ones. Music plays a large role and everyone gets an instrument to allow for participation no matter a person’s ability level. Each service culminates with a skit to highlight the take-home message of the day.

Organizers of the unique services in Schofield, Wis. currently offer the program at two churches monthly, but are looking to expand to at least five more.

“It’s not the same for these people at other churches,” the program leader told the Wausau (Wis.) Daily Herald. “They just don’t connect. They want to be vocal, involved and more interactive. This is a great way to reach them as individuals.” To read more click here.

Flood Of Public Comments Helping To Shape New DSM PDF Print E-mail

Some changes are being made in response to thousands of public comments on the forthcoming Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, but the autism recommendations will likely remain unaltered.

A series of recommendations were released in February as experts from the American Psychiatric Association work to draft the fifth edition of the DSM, which is expected in May 2013. In response, more than 8,600 public comments flooded the organization, most of which were related to proposed changes to the way autism is diagnosed.

Under the DSM proposal, autism, Asperger’s syndrome, childhood disintegrative disorder and pervasive developmental disorder, not otherwise specified would be folded into one diagnosis of “autism spectrum disorders.” Clinicians would then detail a person’s severity on the spectrum.

Though the comments remain confidential, discussion about the proposed autism changes has been heated. Many parents and higher functioning individuals with Asperger’s syndrome say they are concerned that the new terminology would not accurately reflect their level of ability.

In response to the comments, changes have already been made to some sections of the DSM draft including those pertaining to anorexia nervosa, sexual and gender identity disorders, among others. But the experts seem to be sticking to their original plans when it comes to autism, reports American Medical News. To read more click here.

Funding boost and less red tape for Australian Disability Enterprises PDF Print E-mail

Australian Disability Enterprises (ADEs) will receive an additional $4.5 million in 2010-2011 to allow them to continue to support over 19,000 workers with disability across Australia who would not otherwise be able to find work.

The Australian Government funds 600 businesses operated by 206 organisations across the country to provide supported employment opportunities for people with disability.

The Minister for Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs, Jenny Macklin said Australian Disability Enterprises had a vital role providing work and training for people with a disability.

'The Government understands that ADEs are under significant pressure which is why we are providing an additional $4.5 million to support them continue to employ people with a disability during difficult economic times.'

The extra funding is in addition to $9 million provided in 2010-11 to maintain a temporary increase made by the previous Government.

Parliamentary Secretary for Disabilities and Children's Services, Bill Shorten said ADEs made a huge difference in the lives of people with disability.

'A job is the key to social inclusion for people with disability. It provides financial independence, the chance to make a contribution to society and the camaraderie of the workplace,' Mr Shorten said.

This additional funding, allocated from within the disability services budget, brings total Australian Government support for ADEs to more than $204 million in 2010-2011.

The Government will continue to listen to and work with the ADEs to support them in providing benefits to people who would otherwise be excluded from the workforce.

The Government will also introduce a 12-month red-tape reduction trial that will reduce the amount of time Australian Disability Enterprises spend assessing the support needs of their employees through Disability Maintenance Instruments, by only conducting re-assessments under certain circumstances, rather than every two years.

Under this trial, re-assessments need only be undertaken by an Australian Disability Enterprise where there is a significant change in the worker's health status, stamina or physical capacity; where there is a profound change in disability that affects work performance or where there is a significant change in the worker's personal circumstances.

The Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs will also be able to request an assessment by an ADE, as will workers and their families.

'This decision will deliver significant savings to the sector and make it easier for Australian Disability Enterprises to continue the great work they do giving people with disability the benefits of meaningful employment,' Mr Shorten said.

Ken Baker, the Chief Executive of National Disability Services, the peak association representing non-government disability services, has welcomed the measures.

Senate Confirms Controversial Autism Self-Advocate To National Disability Council PDF Print E-mail

After months of delay, the Senate unanimously confirmed Ari Ne’eman on Tuesday to become the first person with autism to serve on the National Council on Disability.

In December President Barack Obama nominated eight new members to the National Council on Disability, which makes recommendations to the president and Congress on disability issues. Early this year, all of the nominations were confirmed except that of Ne’eman, who has autism and is the founder of the Autistic Self-Advocacy Network.

The reason: one or more members of the Senate placed an anonymous hold on the nomination, preventing the full Senate from considering it.

Speculation swirled about the reason for the hold, with some suggesting that Ne’eman’s sometimes divisive views on autism could have been behind the delay. In particular, Ne’eman’s belief that autism should not be cured, but instead should be accepted and accommodated has drawn ire from parents of some individuals who are more adversely affected by the disorder.

As secretively as the hold was placed, however, it was lifted Tuesday morning when Senators voted unanimously to confirm the post along with at least 63 other nominations.

“I’m very pleased to have been confirmed by the U.S. Senate and I look forward to taking my oath as a member of the National Council on Disability and to get down to work,” Ne’eman told Disability Scoop.

The confirmations come after news earlier this week that Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., secured the votes to change the Senate rules to bar holds from being placed anonymously.

High content screening of cortical neurons identifies novel regulators of axon growth PDF Print E-mail

Neurons in the central nervous system lose their intrinsic capacity for axon regeneration as they mature, and it is
widely hypothesized that changes in gene expression are responsible. Testing this hypothesis and identifying the
relevant genes has been challenging because hundreds to thousands of genes are developmentally regulated in
CNS neurons, but only a small subset are likely relevant to axon growth. Here we used automated high content
analysis (HCA) methods to functionally test 743 plasmids encoding developmentally regulated genes in neurite outgrowth assays using postnatal cortical neurons. We identified both growth inhibitors (Ephexin, Aldolase A, Solute Carrier 2A3, and Chimerin), and growth enhancers (Doublecortin, Doublecortin-like, Kruppel-like Factor 6, and CaM-Kinase II gamma), some of which regulate established growth mechanisms like microtubule dynamics and
small GTPase signaling. Interestingly, with only one exception the growth-suppressing genes were developmentally
upregulated, and the growth-enhancing genes downregulated. These data provide important support for the hypothesis that developmental changes in gene expression control neurite outgrowth, and identify potential new gene targets to promote neurite outgrowth
